Ans: Tiger King is the kind of Pratibandapuram. He may be identified as His Highness Jamedar-General, Khaledar-Major and Sir Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur etc. But this name is often shortened to the Tiger King. He gets that name because an astrologer predicted that his death would come from a tiger. He had killed ninety-nine tigers. But the hundredth tiger, a wooden tiger, caused his death.

Crown prince Jung Jung Bahadur grew taller and stronger day by day. He was brought up by an English governess. He was tutored in English by an Englishman. When he grew to twenty he took the reign in his hands.
The Maharaja continued his campaign of tiger-hunting with rare single-mindedness. Within a span of ten years, he killed 70 tigers. It was his master strategy to marry a girl of a state which had a large tiger population. So he was able to kill 99 tigers in all.

Initially, the king seemed well set to realize his ambition. Then some dangers and difficulties cropped up. There were times when the bullet missed its mark and at other times the tiger would leap on him and he would have to fight the wild beast with his bare hands. The Tiger King was able to kill ninety-nine tigers this way and if he could kill just one more tiger all his fears would be over for good and he could give up tiger hunting. But the hundredth tiger could not be found. The Dewan realized the disastrous results if the hundredth tiger was not found. So a tiger was brought in from the People’s Park in Madras and taken directly to the forest where the Maharaja was hunting. The King took aim and the tiger fell in a heap. The Maharaja was extremely happy to have finally killed the hundredth tiger. After he left the hunters took a closer look at the tiger and realized the tiger was not dead as the king had missed the aim. They decided not to tell the Maharaja and one of the hunters killed the tiger. The king was left under the impression that he had achieved his target of killing a hundred tigers.

Ans: it had been the 3rd birthday of the Maharaja’s son and he wanted to shop for a gift from the toy shop. He bought a wooden tiger which was poorly carved by an unskilled carpenter. It had a rough surface with tiny slivers of wood standing up like quills everywhere it, his arm got infected. In four days, it developed into a fester and spread everywhere the arm. The king died while being operated upon. The king’s death is ironical but not surprising. Having ‘killed’ the 100th tiger, the king is thrilled for he has fulfilled his vow and disproved the prediction of the royal astrologer. He is now comfortable for he thinks he cannot die of a tiger’s attack. No wonder, he orders the ‘dead’ tiger to be taken in a procession though the town and gets a tomb erected over it. All this while he doesn’t know that the 100th victim wasn’t killed by him but by other hunters. That is indeed quite ironical. Death is lurking around him and therefore the king is unaware of it. Again, it is ironical that a king who has killed 100 tigers and is bold and fearless dies of a mere sliver on the body of a wooden tiger. Thus, ironically death does come to him from a tiger.
