The most characteristic future of the age was the comparative religious tolerance which was due largely to the queen’s influence. The frightful excess of the religious war known as the Thirty Year’s war on the content found no parallel in England. Upon her accession Elizabeth found the whole kingdom divided against itself, the north was largely catholic while the southern countries were as strongly protestant.
It was an age of social contentment. The rapid growth of urbanization gave employment to thousand of men increasing trade brought enormous wealth to England and this wealth was shared to this extent at least that for the first time some systematic care for the needy was attempted. The increase of wealth, the improvement in living, the opportunities for labour and new social content became the factors for the new literary activities.
Edmund Spenser who was the founder of early Renaissance Poetry invented a new verse from which has been called since his day the Spenserian stanza. The Spenserian stanza is a fixed verse form invented by Edmund Spenser for his epic poem The Faerie Queene. Each stanza contains nine lines in total: eight lines in iambic pentameter followed by a single ‘alexandrine’ line in iambic hexameter. The rhyme scheme of these lines is ABABBCBCC. His famous works are Fairy Queen, The Shepheardes Calender, Orlando and Amoretti.

Nearly two hundred poets are recorded in this short period and many of them were profile writers.
