Mrichchhakatika Written by Shudraka – A love story full of twists, kindness, and courage
Once upon a time in the grand city of Ujjayini…
There lived a kind and honest man named Charudatta. He was a Brahmin, wise and respected. He used to be rich, but he gave away most of his money to help others. Now he lived a simple life in a small house with his wife and little son Rohasena. Even though he had very little, people still came to him for advice. His heart was full of goodness. He had a close friend named Maitreya, who always stood by his side.
A beautiful courtesan with a noble heart
In the same city lived a rich and graceful courtesan named Vasantasena. Many men wanted her attention, including a cruel and selfish man named Samsthanaka, who was the brother-in-law of the king. But Vasantasena didn’t care for money or power. She wanted real love. One day, she saw Charudatta from afar and noticed how gentle and thoughtful he was. She didn’t care that he was poor. His kindness touched her heart.
A quiet love begins
One evening, during a festival, Charudatta and Vasantasena met in a garden. It was peaceful, and they talked for a long time. Their eyes spoke what words could not. A quiet, deep love was born. Later, Vasantasena came to visit Charudatta at his home. She left behind a box of her gold and jewels by mistake. Charudatta kept it safe for her.
A thief with a love story
In another part of the city, a clever thief named Sharvilaka wanted to marry Madanikā, Vasantasena’s maid. But Madanikā was not free; she belonged to Vasantasena. To buy her freedom, Sharvilaka sneaked into Charudatta’s home and stole the box of jewels. He didn’t know they belonged to Vasantasena. When he gave the jewels to her, she smiled and forgave him. She even let Madanikā go with him. That’s how kind Vasantasena was.
Trouble is coming
Meanwhile, Samsthanaka, the evil man who wanted Vasantasena for himself, grew angry. She had always ignored him. His heart was full of jealousy. One day, he tricked her into riding with him in his cart. He took her to a lonely park. When she again refused to be with him, he became violent. In his rage, he tried to strangle her and left her lying on the ground, thinking she was dead.
The blame falls on Charudatta
Samsthanaka spread a lie. He told the city that Charudatta had killed Vasantasena for her jewels. People were shocked. The judges believed the false story. The jewels had been in Charudatta’s home, and no one knew where Vasantasena was. Charudatta did not lie to save himself. He believed truth would win. But the court sentenced him to death.
A little clay cart and a mother’s love
Before all this happened, there was a sweet moment between Charudatta’s son Rohasena and Vasantasena. The boy wanted a toy cart made of gold, but they could only afford a little clay cart. Vasantasena saw this and, with love in her heart, placed her precious jewels inside the clay cart as a gift for the boy. She wanted to bring him joy, even in their hard times. This little clay cart, so small and simple, would later carry the biggest truth of all.
Just when all hope was lost…
Charudatta stood ready to die. He didn’t beg. He didn’t complain. People wept. His friend Maitreya couldn’t believe it. But then—just before the execution—Vasantasena appeared, alive and breathing. She stopped everything and told the real story. Samsthanaka had tried to kill her. Charudatta was innocent. The crowd cheered. The truth had won. Samsthanaka was arrested.
A new king, a new beginning
At the same time, the old king Palaka, who was harsh and unfair, was thrown out. A kind and brave man named Aryaka became the new king. He had escaped prison with help from Sharvilaka and others. Aryaka remembered Charudatta’s honesty. He made him a judge, a man of great respect again. Charudatta’s name was cleared, and his family was proud of him.
And love finds its home
Vasantasena and Charudatta were finally together, not just in heart, but in life. They had fought through lies, danger, and sorrow—but they stood strong. Their love was not based on gold or beauty. It was built on truth, respect, and kindness. And so, from that small clay cart… a grand love story rolled forward.
